Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a official communication.
Police state they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a swastika, they stated.
Officers then discovered numerous other smeared automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say initial examinations show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; investigators are presently not informed of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to solve the incident" and have asked to the community for details.
A senior political figure stated the vandalism rendered him speechless and required to be addressed quickly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a shooter targeting people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
