Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the right to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
